Mr Bongo (or Luis Libres as his friends know him) started life many years ago, selling from a shop off London's Oxford Street. Here was a meeting place for salsa teachers, merengue and bacahta DJs, promoters, and just about anyone that loved Latin music. Long before emails and Facebook were being used to promote events, you used to turn up at Mr Bongos with your flyers and promote your event. And, at the same time, check out the latest hits (they even had a top 20!), hear what was hot and new in the salsa world, which bands were coming over, who had a new venue, and which teachers had just come from the US or Cuba. I always remember Luis being a little moody in the early days, answering my usual "what's new in?" or "what did Julian the Duke buy?", with an arch of his eyebrows and a roll of his eyes! However, that was nothing compared to the guys in the hip hop place upstairs who were much ruder! But in those days CDs were £15 to £20 from Descarga and you had to wait two weeks for them to drop through your letter box. |
